VISI.NEWS | BANDUNG – The Thai government has officially launched a cryptocurrency-based payment program called TouristDigiPay, designed specifically for foreign visitors.

The initiative aims to boost tourist spending and accelerate the recovery of the tourism sector, which has been struggling due to the pandemic and global economic slowdown.

However, the move has raised several concerns. Experts warn that large-scale use of digital assets could bring new risks, including potential money laundering, extreme price volatility, and overreliance on digital infrastructure that may not yet be fully reliable.

According to Thailand Ministry of Tourism, TouristDigiPay will allow foreign tourists to make payments at various merchants using popular cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), and stablecoins.

The government has also partnered with digital wallet providers to ensure smooth transactions.

Still, some industry players highlight regulatory risks. Thailand maintains strict rules on digital assets, and it remains unclear how the government will balance tourism promotion with tight regulatory oversight.

“This is a step forward for tourism, but without proper regulations, it could open the door to significant misuse,” said a regional financial analyst.

For tourists, the program may bring convenience, especially for those who prefer using crypto over cash. Yet, exchange rate volatility remains a concern, as cryptocurrency prices can fluctuate dramatically within hours.

With the launch of TouristDigiPay, Thailand has become one of the first Southeast Asian countries to officially integrate crypto payments for foreign visitors.

While innovative, the success of this program will heavily depend on regulations, market stability, and public acceptance.
