VISI.NEWS | BANDUNG – Coinbase Ad Ban Triggers Controversy. The UK’s Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned a Coinbase TV advertisement for being misleading and failing to provide proper risk warnings.

The ad portrayed the traditional financial system as a “leaky roof” a metaphor for systemic economic failure which regulators deemed overly critical and potentially offensive to public institutions.

Brian Armstrong Reacts: “There’s a Kernel of Truth”

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong sharply criticized the ban on social media platform X, stating that the ad “sparked quite a reaction” and adding, “If you can’t say it, then there must be a kernel of truth in it.”

He went on to say that many in the UK still view crypto as gambling, missing the point that digital assets represent a new financial infrastructure, not just speculative tools.

UK Regulation Under Scrutiny

Despite the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) enforcing rules on crypto promotions, recent reports revealed that 46% of 1,702 flagged crypto ads were still live as of January 2025. Moreover, no financial penalties have been issued to firms violating advertising guidelines.

Former FCA chair Charles Randell warned that without real enforcement, these rules are effectively toothless.

Regulatory Imbalance with Global Competitors

Armstrong emphasized that the UK is lagging behind jurisdictions like the EU and U.S. in creating innovation-friendly crypto regulations.

He argued that while some regions adopt a balanced and supportive stance, the UK’s restrictive approach risks stifling progress and pushing talent abroad.

Censorship Backfires: Streisand Effect in Action

Ironically, the ban has made the Coinbase ad even more viral, triggering what’s known as the Streisand Effect where attempts to suppress content only draw more public attention.
Within the crypto community, many praised Coinbase for exposing flaws in legacy finance and challenging the narrative that only traditional systems are trustworthy.
